Mr. Thapiporn Suporn, a lecturer from Khon Kaen University International College (KKUIC), was invited to share his insights at the workshop on “Southeast Asia’s Response to Maritime Power Projection.” Held on August 4th, 2023 in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, this event was organized by the Centre for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) in collaboration with the RSIS Maritime Security Programme and the Diplomatic Academy of Vietnam (DAV).
The aim was to explore ASEAN Member States’ strategies in tackling the growing challenge of maritime power projection beyond the region. Mr. Thapiporn took the stage as a speaker on the first panel, where he delved into the “Convergence and Divergence of Interests surrounding the Management of Maritime Power Projection in and around Southeast Asia.” This panel brilliantly uncovered how Southeast Asian nations are adeptly navigating the complex waters of maritime power projection from global players. Adding more depth to the discussion, Mr. Thapiporn also shared his insights on Thailand’s stance in the Great Power Competition. His perspective shed light on the nuanced considerations that shape Thailand’s response to this evolving landscape.
The highlight of the event was a free discussion among the speakers and the audiences in the last session, with the aims to complete the following objectives: To identify ASEAN Member States perception on the current trend of external maritime power projection.
► To survey Southeast Asia’s national and regional responses to maritime power projection.
► To discuss the future of maritime geopolitical scenarios in Southeast Asia and the possible national and collective efforts to mitigate the destabilizing trends of external maritime power projection to the region and uphold international rules-based order.
