About
Hello! We are the Helping Hands Club created by two exchange students: Sydnie Johns and Duanmaly Yiengyouav. We created this club to volunteer and give our time to the lovely community here in Khon Kaen, Thailand. We want to make a difference (big or small) in each aspect of communities here through the help of KKUIC. Our mission statement is to provide emotional, recreational, and motivational support to children in need and encourage KKUIC students to contribute to sustainable community development.

Our first volunteering event as a club was visiting an orphanage (Baan Luuk Rak). Our activities included singing, dancing, playing games, and coloring with the children! Baan Luuk Rak is a school, home, and a safe place for children who have faced difficult obstacles in their life. The teacher of the orphanage is Kru Ya who graciously allowed us to come spend some time with the children.
Speaking on behalf of the club, I can say that this experience opened our eyes to a new perspective of how to create a happy environment. Upon arriving, the children were immediately filled with excitement and they were very, very welcoming! The kids were super excited to spend some time with us. There were about fifteen children in different age groups but the activities we did catered to all!
The kids were super energetic which helped us loosen up a bit. We did not know what to expect and they definitely had us tired out by the time we had to leave. They love to dance, sing, and most importantly do crafts! Next time we visit them we will definitely plan to do more crafts with them.
Our second volunteering event was visiting the children at Srinagarind Hospital. It was a little challenging at first because we have to be cleared to be able to be in the same room as the children since some are receiving treatments or some are sick. When we were given the green light, we split into 2 groups and entertained the children. Some activities we did were singing, dancing, making bracelets, and decorating bookmarks!
From this experience, I believe that we are not only there for the children but we are also there for the parents/ guardians. The children were very shy and some were not able bodied, so it was a bit challenging trying to balance out our activities but the parents/guardians were very helpful and encouraging for the volunteers!
